I'm looking at a 1894-S Morgan dollar certified by ANACS, AU-50 "HAIR TOOLED". I have never seen this designation before. Can someone inform me what that means?

tooling is just what it sounds like,, in your particular case the hairlines were enhanced by the use of a tool of some type ,, in an effort to achive a higher grade .
