...tells me he found an old coin from 1812 and wants to know what it's worth.

I give him the speech about condition, denomination, blah, blah, blah - bring it in and let me see it.

So, he brought it in today.
I told him I didn't think it was even worth 25 cents anymore.

I had a similar thing happen around Christmas. I heard my uncle across the room describing a gold coin that he found in the church collection basket (he does the deposit for them). He was trying to figure out how much it was worth. He said that it was really old and that he couldn't find a date on it but it was gold. Of course I was very interested and asked if I could see it. We went into his office where my other uncle looked at it and started to do a search on the computer. When I got it I realized pretty quickly that it was a very dirty Presidential dollar. I read them the date off the edge of the coin and told them that it was worth $1. Needless to say, it was not the outcome they wanted to hear but at least the mystery of the gold coin was solved.

Looks like a coin that's been through the shredder at a junkyard...it spits out the non iron stuff...a buddy of mine gives me the pennies he gets like that and takes the rest to the bank.

Nice road kill. Was on a site long ago and they had a road kill section. It was fun to see the different forms of damage.

I felt kind of bad for him. He felt pretty silly. He thought it was an old copper coin.

He said he was working on some old lady's dryer when he found it. I tried to downplay it as much as I could and still keep a straight face. I don't want him to be afraid to bring in anything he finds.

And people wonder why I make fun of them for not collecting coins.

Ran into a situation with my Mother-In-Law where she swore she bought Golden Coins for my collection for only (I think it was) 10 for $25 with the option of buying more each time they issued another. As you probably already figured it out, they were the Presidential dollars. I told her not to buy the things but she was adamant about the "Golden" dollars. (She lives in Overland Park, Kansas and was 82 at the time.) She even quoted the newspaper article; "The Kansas City Star wouldn't lie", I can still hear her say.

Sure enough, for Christmas I received the special George Washington Golden Dollar certified as the first genuine presidential "Golden Dollar" complete with certificates qualifying me to purchase a genuine, imitation, hardwood display case, and future offerings for some ridiculous price.

I had already bought 6 rolls of Washington Dollars and immediately sent her a roll to show her what she had mistaken as the real Gold Dollar. To this day she still swears that the price on the mint roll is wrong and that the certified, plastic covered roll she had bought was real gold.

Lord help us from ourselves.

I've got everybody I know on the lookout for anything "unusual" and I guess this comes with the territory.

I have one guy about every couple of months he lets me inspect his change jar before rolling and dumping them. That's how I found my 88-P RDV-006.
