I have a coin of Septimius Severus, but I can not find any record of others like it on the major identification websites.

The front depicts his laureate head right. The legend reads L SE.........PART MAX (The letters from E to P have been lost, but most likely says L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX).

The reverse depicts Genius standing left sacrificing over an altar and holding corn ears. The legend reads ..........COS II P P.

Here is the catch... all records of coins LIKE this are silver, but this one is not. It appears to be copper, but could be bronze. Can anyone find a coin like this, or do I have an unlisted one here? (Sorry about the lack of a picture, I tried being descrpitive) Thanks!

There's a copper as listed in Sear, #6470, with the same type (Genius offering sacrifice holding cornucopia) but the legends are slightly different (obverse SEVERVS PIVS AVG, reverse PM TRP XVI COS III PP with SC across). Listed in Sear as RIC# 782b.

A few questions to ask. If it's a bronze coin, what's the denomination? A "laureate head" indicates it should be either an as or a sestertius. Does it have "SC" across the reverse or in the exergue? if it doesn't, then it's not a genuine bronze/copper/brass coin of the period. What's the diameter? Both the as and sestertius are larger than a denarius; if it's the same size as a denarius and doesn't have SC on it anywhere on the reverse, then it's most likely to be a fake denarius rather than a genuine copper coin; whether it would turn out to be an ancient fake or a modern fake we'd have to see pics.

Yes, it sounds like a "limes denarius" but we'd need to see pics

The diameter is 17mm. I can not see an SC in the reverse field. The damage to the front where corrosion is showing was there when I received it, which is how I knew it was not silver. It came with a lot of four other uncleaned (very unclean) Roman Provincial coins. The dirt that was on it was very thick and hard to eradicate, so if it happens to be a fake it is an ancient one.

Are you sure that's Septimus Severus? The hair looks more like Caracalla - though I admit the start of the legend does look like L S... Of course, if it is an ancient forgery - which I'm pretty sure it is, then it's very possible for the legends to be blundered anyway.

What are the possibilities that it is an unlisted type? Lord knows how many different kinds are out there....

Also... It is hard to see in the scan, but the L SE are easy to see when it is in your hand.

I think the Imperial series is pretty well documented - the chances of it being unlisted are slim. Of course it if is an ancient forgery then that doesn't really count because so many of the legends were blundered anyway.

I'd list it at the "forum ancient coins site" - there are a couple of experts specificially on Septimus there.
