Could someone please explain to me what the German Notgeld notes are? and where I can find prices for them? I have the Standard catalog of General issues 1368-1960 but I couldn't find them in it...

Notegeld started off as city based emergency money after the First World War. As the city "burgers" or mayors discovered that people were collecting these they issued thousands of designs, specificially for collectors - hence the profusion of them available. I have about 2,000 or so and some are really cool. They were issued in sets and a full set is worth more than the sum of it's parts.

The best catalogue I have is a set of books called "Deutches Notgeld" though of course Notegeld was also issued in Austria.

You won't find any in normal banknote catalogues.

IF you have any and want me to look them up - please post. However because these things are so common they tend not to have high value. A full set of 6 or 8 from a particular series is probably only worth €5 - €10 or so - though as with everything there are rarities.

Here's a couple of pics of one of my albums

No they are pretty much all in German I'm afraid. Even the main catalogues are in German (though I do have one in English) - I guess that's where the main market for them is.

They are, by and large, very cheap to buy so it's an inexpensive "dabble" if you're thinking of trying them out.

For these they must be uncirculated to be worth collecting - they never circulated so there is no reason for them to be less than that condition.

have fun...
