Poll Question
*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** I've heard countless times that collecting coins was the Hobby of Kings. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I find that interesting, well this POLL should give us some insight as to how many Kings are in our midst! Below is a salary range of total family income "before" taxes. (GROSS INCOME) Please be honest because information in = information out. So if we have good stats we will all benefit from this interesting Poll. Remember it's all anonymous so don't be shy or embarrassed, the I.R.S. ain't gonna be lookin' for ya! Glenn

It used to be for kings, centuries ago they were only interested in ancients or gold coins.
Australia's average household income is around $80,000.
AWOTE (Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings) is about AUD $67,000. (Australian Bureau of Statistics)

LOL, my household salary range and total income are way different. I must add dividends, capital gains, rental income, retirement income, plus what the wife and I make working. That is not to mention the money made from selling scrap metals I mine from former junk yards using my detector, which has been a couple of hundred a month over the last year or so with metals prices consistently rising.
But one must think of it this way. Only a hand full of people other than Kings could afford to put a coin of any kind away into a collection. They would have to spend to few coins they acquired to sustain their livelihood.

Tim, You just gave me a great idea! I have a good friend that once had a junk yard on his property. I'm sure if I asked, that he wouldn't care if I searched for scrap metal!! The property is all grown up with weeds that had the cars and parts. I've been scrappin for a couple years now and never thought of that. More $$$$, means more coins!

Faroud.
Yes, this is the hobby of kings. It's also the hobby of peasants. That's the beauty - it's not limited by income, but by interest and commitment. A few dollars and the recognition that you hold history in your hands are the only prerequisites; it only scales upwards from there according to the value of your monetary investment, which has nothing to do with your emotional investment.
In that respect, we are equal to kings.

I think the real reason its called hobby of Kings is because all coins have Kings, Queens, Leaders, Presidents, gods, godesses, etc.... In a way were collecting Kings.

I think it is because the "great collections" that were put together in past centuries - particually in the 15th to 18th centuries, were acumulated by the very wealthy - the aristoracy of the time - ie, kings, dukes, etc. These coins tended to focus on ancients - some ancient Greek coins are works of art in their own right.
The ability of everybody and anybody to collect coins today bears no resemblence to the ability back a few centuries ago.
Interestingly, there developed a large sub industry in creating plaster casts of rare coins to satisfy the collecting craze among the rich during this "hobby of kings" time. Many of these casts are still available and can fetch a few quid in their own right.

Another reason it was the hobby of Kings was they were the only ones who HAD the surplus coins. Even in this country in the middle of the 19th century the mintages were such there were only a couple of US coins available PER PERSON. In 1798, the first year that the Mint produced over a million coins, that mintage only amounted to about one per coin for every ten people. US coins did not really start becoming commonplace until the latter half of the 19th century.

WOW...Guys check out this video! The treasures of President Ben Ali from Tunisia have been found because he supposedly fled the country and left everything behind in a hurry... for Millions in cash spread all acvross the house in multiple secret places and metalsafes behind secret walls and stuff! Video here: http://nos.nl/artikel/220336-schatt...evonden.htmlMy online name may be Kingz, but I deffinetly don't have a royal income. Luckily though I / we can make a nice collection of coins for ourselfs, but as you can see in the video... it DOES make a difference on how you can approach this hobby as a King/President, I wouldn't want to trade for a buck with guys like him though Viva la revolutionz

Surveys always ask such personal questions and I suspect about 95% of the answers are fake. I really can't see anyone giving out any personal information today. Birthdates, credit card numbers, salaries, etc. I know many think a web site is sscure but not true. Almsot any decent hacker can find out many things about anyone. And for a few dollars, those people search web sites can zero in on anyone with the slightest bit of info.

I better check my lineage because I'm loving the hobby of kings and the sport of kings- horse racing. One has ZERO return on investment.
