That is one of my favorite moderns and it is the one that fills the Commemorative Dollar hole in my 7070. Since I live in the city that kicked it all off, I probably have a closer association to Lewis and Clark than most people. It is also a coin that my wife purchased for me.

I attended the Peace Medal nickel release on the St Louis riverfront in 2004. Of course, there were Lewis and Clark reenactors there but they arrived in style complete with a keelboat landing on the riverfront. Also present were representatives of the major tribes encountered on the expedition, Ambassadors from France and Spain, then-mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore, and the Secretary of the Interior. Oh yeah, and 200,000 nickels...
