I am totally new to coins. I just turned 21 and my dad gave me this coin. I'm strapped for cash and I know they can be worth from 35-$$$$. Any help would be appreciated.

Also I was wondering what the mark on the side of the coin is from? Doesn't seem like every day use could cause that.

Also I did some reading kind of understood it...I don't think this is a proof. I think it is one of the with the less accurate dies?, for circulation?

Welcome to Coin Community, Rbc2007. What you have there is a garden-variety, somewhat-circulated 1921-D. There are any number of things which could cause the dings on the rim of the coin - silver is a relatively soft metal and easily damaged. I wouldn't expect it to go for much over $20-25 if you were to throw it up on ebay, and as a result it'd never return the cost of grading.

To me it appears to worth about melt, and not worth grading, going rate would be about $20 at a dealer, perhaps a dollar or two more.

Well I guess I'll just fork the cash to get it graded and maybe in 20 years it'll be worth something? Or is this just a bunk coin

There is really no reason to spend the money on grading. It doesn't justify it now, nor will it in the future. Keep in mind, 1921-D was the single highest mintage of Morgans ever. They'll never be uncommon.

Nonetheless, this Morgan is great collector coin. It's just not an investor grade coin worth getting graded.

I would not send this coin to a TPG. It is a VERY common Morgan dollar and circulated. The submission fee is almost as much as the coins FMV, as stated, will never be uncommon. I would just hang on to it. It's a special coin that your dad gave you, that's reward enough ;-)
