mdpmedia Pillar of the Community United States 3546 Posts	Posted 02/21/2011 11:03 am Hi, I got lucky rummaging through some low value 'junk' coins at an auction the other day and found this coin. I was wondering if you think it appears to be genuine and unaltered. I also wanted some feedback on whether or not the correct cleaning procedure of this coin would reveal additional details worthy enough to bring it up another grade. In summary please list your opinion on: 1) the authenticity, 2) the current grade in present condition, 3) the potential new grade after correct cleaning, 4) any recommendations on what chemicals or procedures to implement in order to correctly clean this coin without damaging it. Prethen Pillar of the Community United States 3234 Posts	Posted 02/21/2011 12:04 pm I'm pretty sure the coin is authentic but it's environmentally damaged beyond repair. You could probably clean it up a little bit with some dish soap and water and lightly rub with the finger tips (you would never do this with a coin that had any mint luster left though!). Possibly a long dip in acetone or denatured alcohol might help a tiny bit, but the surfaces appear to be eaten into over time. Report this Post to the Staff

I would leave it that way, sometimes when they are cleaned big scratches and dents come to light... The way the coin is gives it its' character and makes it what it is... Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6423 Posts	Posted 02/21/2011 2:37 pm Obverse barely makes Good-4 while the reverse looks VG-10 for detail. Prethen's cleaning advice is good, just don't expect a huge improvement. In any case, this is almost certainly a genuine example of a scarce coin. An excellent find in a junk lot!
