Hi, What is the size or weight of this coin? This looks similar to a countermarked 4 bits (3 shillings, 3 pence) from Dominica. These bits were also typically stamped on Spanish colonial coins. If this is indeed what it is, it would be a very valuable coin, like this one: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotvi...aec7b2f1f89f

Looks to be Spanish, possibly 1 or 2 Reale. Just my guess.

Thanks!
The coin weighs 1.4 grams and varies from 15 to 18 mm in diameter.

Unfortunately that is much too light to be a four bits from Dominica. These coins are closer to the 5 gram range.

Numismat,
Yes, it is a very thin piece at the edges, and as you can see, most of the markings are worn away. I looked at the link you sent, and the markings on the back are similar to several pieces on that site, so I will continue to search along those lines - Thanks for everyone's help!

On the c/s stamp side you can see the Spanish coat of arms and one of the Pillars,(on the left), to bad the coat of arms is almost gone and you can not pick out which king it is. 1774 should be for "Carolus III" if this coin was not re-dated? At 1.4 grams it might be closest to a half-Real coin.

odentheviking,
Thanks! - I was looking at those worn markings trying to figure out what it could be - so much more detail shows in the photographs than I can see with a magnifying glass - I looked up the half-Real and I can see what you mean by the Pillars, and the size seems to correspond as well. What do you mean by re-dated (other than the obvious)?
Thanks to everyone for your help - the gentleman who found this is very grateful to know what this might be!

I was just stateing that unless the coin had been re-dated,(which would be very unlikely), the coat of arms should be for the Spanish King Carolus the III. And you could google other coins of this same date to see what it should look like w/o all the wear. The c/s is one I don't know, also odd that it is stamped w/a "4" as this often meant a re-weight and grade of a "4 Reale".
Great find! Thanks for shareing it with us.

Can anyone give me some advice/direction on finding the value of this coin (beyond the obvious "cool" factor)? I am trying to help my friend, and have no idea what's the best way to proceed.
Thanks to everyone for helping identify it!!
