Hi Folks
New to the forum. I have been going through a bunch of coins that I have accumulated over the years and have a few questions. On a 1972d penny the nine in the date appears to be filled in. I am curious as to what caused this and what it is called or referred to if anything. On a 1878 silver dollar (i know this is for modern coins just thought I would keep it in the same forum). The letter d in the word dollar is missing the bottom portion of the d. The best I can tell does not appear to be any damage there. Just curious as to what would cause this and what it would be referred to as. Sorry for the scans don't have access to a camera. thanks for any info provided.

The filled 9 in the penny is probably caused by a chipped die, causing that area to become raised.

I can't exactly see what you're talking about on the dollar, but it might just be grease. Also, has that dollar been cleaned/polished? it kind of looks like it from the pictures.

The dollar has not been cleaned as far as I know. It was located approx 20 yrs ago along with approx 10 other silver dollars, it may have been cleaned prior to that but I have no knowledge if it was. The d I am referring to is in the word dollar if you look at the bottom of the d there is a space where it does not connect all the way through if that makes any sense. I know the scans are lousy but it was the best I could do. Thanks for the info

The 'filled' 9 is caused by a piece of the die breaking out leaving a void. The coin was not struck all the way in that area because of the void. These are pretty common and are called 'die chips'.

The missing piece of the 'D' on the dollar is caused when that detail breaks on the positive hub that creates the die and is never sunk into the die. Because the detail missing was on the hub, which in turn creates many dies, it is also usually considered common. I do not study Morgan dollars, so I know little to nothing about this particular case.

The Morgan dollar looks like it could be VAM 195 or 195A broken D. We will need pics of the obverse to be sure.

It is really hard to tell from scans. Pics would be better. I'm leaning towards 195A. Try VAM World VAMS 195 & 195A. There are pics to help you attribute it. Let us know what you come up with.
