Would this one live up to an AU58 grading? Lotsa bag marks but not much wear except on the breast.

AU sounds good. You should check the 4th right star, it is broken. Try VAM World.

I too would say 55. Most AU58 coins would grade high except for a slight rub.

my first impression was AU-55-58 because of the luster and I have seen quite a few 1878 Morgans so I am going to have to stick with that

Au 55 grade seems appropriate for this coin.

When you are on the fence (55 vs. 58) a single mark in a prime focal area will make a difference. The good-sized ding on Miss Liberty's brow would suggest the lower grade IMO, so AU-55. Nice original look overall and I wonder if the VAM is anything special.

Thanks Aladinslamp, you had identified that VAM 197 for me quite a while back and I really did appreciate it. Die cracks on the reverse and the missing tail feather next to the right leg and of course the broken 4th right star. Don't believe it's in the top 100 though so wouldn't think any extra value there. Never did get a definitive grade though which is why I asked for opinions on it. I had been thinking of selling it but decided not to. I'd guestimated AU50 but consensus seems to be 55. Thanks to all. This was one of the first 2 Morgans I'd ever bought way way back in November of last year at the beginning of my coin collecting career.
