I did a search of the forum I came across no word of a scanner, may I ask why that is? the results from a scanner can be excellent. Once you've scanned an image with 1600 dpi you can keep zooming in with out the normal amount of pixelation from a camera (apart from a SLR although image stabilization may become an issue then).

I'll have to make some scans and zip them up to show you =).

Here's a link to the compressed photos I took using the scanner; https://goccf.com/t/81884

And a download of the uncomressed photos; http://www.2shared.com/file/RbnQv0if/Desktop.html

It's around 14megs. It took 3mins to scan. It can take upto 15mins with higher dpi.

By the way it's my first time I've used 2shared, so I don't know how good it is... I've never heard of it before.

Oh and remember to do a virus scan, you have my word there's no virus on my file but it's also best to scan files you download anyhow.

Scanners are designed for matte 2D objects, i.e. photos, papers, etc while coins are reflective 3D objects. Scanners can give nice detail on a coin but there is one big reason why they are not ideal for imaging coins- scanners are not capable of showing luster which is an important factor when examining a coin either in hand or by image.

I came across this due to your reply biokemist6;

http://coins.calkinsc.com/old_site/...erascan.html

I can see what you mean about the lack of luster. Seems using both a Scanner and Camera is ideal because high dpi.But if I could only choose one it would be a camera. =)
