Hello All,
I looked this up on "Wiki" and they claim they were minted at 8.75 grams. I have two, one goes at 8.28 grams and another for 8.33 grams. I would not say either one has "Heavy Ware", and the heavier one was given to me by my grandfather,(his father gave it to him), and has been in a leather case most of its life!

What's wrong here?

It depends on what Half Eagle you are referring to. Capped Bust and Capped Head Half Eagles do weigh 8.75 grams. All other Half Eagles 1834-1929 weigh 8.36 grams.

Thanks bio, My halfs are just the liberty halfs 1880 and 1895, so I guess they are correct for weight. Its funny because "wiki" does not show the "capped" coins in their picture but that is the weight they are listing?
Thanks again, Paul.

My first inclination is to agree that they are of correct weight. Gold is a soft metal and wears easily.

What condition are they in?

At 8.28 grammes, this coin is 0.95% underweight.
At 8.33 grammes, this coin is 0.35% underweight
What was the U.S. Mint's remedy allowance for these coins?

I am no good at gradeing coins! I would have to post some pics here and see what others think.
As I said before, the 1895 may have circulated for 10 or maybe 20 years but has been in a case since my GGrandfather gave it to my Grandfather! The 1880,(8.28 grams), circulated for many years but still has alot of its details intact.

Both are well within wear and tolerance. To be 10% light, they'd have to worn almost to flat discs.

If you can bear to give up the sentiment, it would only cost a few bucks to scrap the 95 and get a nice one that's not all scratched.

Thanks BiggFredd, I understand but I think I will be holding on to that 95 for many years to come. Not sure why/how it is so scratched up, maybe a vending machine? If there is a story I am sure it is long lost now.

Could anyone venture a guess as to grading these two coins?
Many Thanks.
