Can anyone explain what has happened here? It looks like a die crack through the center of the 8 and extra metal on the 8.

Is it extra metal or an extention, or off shoot, of the crack? It's neat either way. What magnification did you use?

It looks like the die crack forks as it goes across the center of the 8 (see pic 4). I'm trying to get a better pic. I used 20x & 40x.

I've been to VAM world, but can't locate it.

I really don't think that is a die crack Chris..... hubbing of the die required several blows (7 to 10 at the rate of one per day) if I recall correctly..... I think that what may appear as a crack is merely a residual effect of the hubbing.... (kinda like doubling is)..... while it is not beyond the threshold of possibility, this would be a very out of the ordinary location for a die crack.... especially on a Morgan reverse (anvil die).

Is this what you refer to?

I use microsoft paint.... built into most computers I think, I save images in "my pictures"..... I hover my mouse over an image.... I right click on the image.... a drop down screen gives options.... I choose "open with".....another drop down screen with more options.... I click on "paint"..... trial and error from there.

I agree with Zee (I also edited her post to show the picture she had uploaded), you will see this allot on Morgan dollars and it seems to happen more often when there are 2 8's side by side for some reason

Yeah, those aren't cracks Chris.... they are often found on other devices (letters, numbers, stars, portraits, etc) as well, but generally only on uncirculated coins, before wear takes its toll.

Mike, I am calling the obvious die chips "die chips"..... those "cracks" I am calling a residual effect caused by die hubbing.
