My grandfather recently just passed away...he was a respected veteran and a state retiree.....he was an amazing man and a perfect grandfather.......
With that said...my grandmother gave me a large bag that weighs about 20 pounds and is full of his old coin collections. The coins go back as late as 1866 and are mixed of foreign and U.S. I would like to get the coin collection appraised so I can get it insured and stored correctly.....im looking for any suggestions of honest coin appraisers in the central PA area. Any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks

My condolences.

I have no knowledge of your area but I would like to suggest you start going through them yourself. At least separate them into a few groups. Maybe like these: Foreign, Classic American silver, Modern US Silver (JFK from 64-70, pre 1965 Roosevelt dime and wash quarters, everything else.

This will help seperate the Bullion (Modern US Silver) from the other potentially valuable numismatic items.

I would also reccomend you get a Red Book to help identify which coins may be worth more than a "once over". How are they currently stored?

Please feel free to post pictures, we all like pics around here! Dont be a stranger to the grading section as well! :)

Pics would help alot. Lot of people here really know their stuff when it comes to coins. Great idea to sort and seperate them out too. If you can't do the pics, throw a few dates at us w/brief descriptions.

There are definately a lot of great experts that can give you ideas of what you have... To anyone in your situation, the Red Book is a must. It gives you a beginning point where you can start at. Good Luck

I am sorry for you loss, I too lost my grandfather a few years agio who had a huge coin hoard (couldn't really call it a collection). I can understand it would be a big deal trying to photograph each and every coin to try and get a value. If I was just wanting to know a value of all the coins I would call around to some coin dealers in your area and let them know you are not interested in selling the coins you are just looking for someone to give you an appraisal for insurance purposes. They may know someone that will do this if they aren't willing to do it themselves but they will probably charge you to do it because it does take time but letting them know you are not interested in selling will have them give you an accurate value instead of them trying to rip you off by offering a low ball amount. If you do allow someone to go through them be sure you are there with them as they do it especially if its someone you do not know because its easy to slip a coin in your pocket and no one know

I appreciate everything here.....everyone on this site has been very helpful....im still not figuring out this forums picture taking yet though due to the fact that everytime I try to load pictures it says the files are too big and I cant figure out getting the file size and names and all correct for the site to allow me to post I'm going to keep trying and hopefully do as sailor suggested and get them in groups, then when I find some unusual finds I can try and post pictures.....ive seen some old germans with the nazi swastika (pardon the spelling)....many foreign....some early 1900 penny's many of the coins are in perfet condition.....ill do my best to get pictures thanks again

if you would like to send me your pictures I will resize them for you and post them in your post for you. You can email them to me at Bryan1315 at coincommunity.com if you would like me to do that. You can also upload them to a free online picture hosting site like photobucket and then just copy the image location and paste the link in your post. Which ever you prefer will be fine

You can also go to https://www.imageshack.com and upload your photo's there (it's 100% free - you just need an account). Then they have a forum feature that will resize the photo's for you automatically. I use it all the time :)

Flook, very sorry for your loss. Sure is great to have those memories!

I would also say do a little searching on your own. Do you have an account on ebay? If so, you can do a search for the coins you have, often they have very good pictures posted. After you have I.D.ed a coin and are looking at all like it that are for auction....... role down and look to the left side of the page. You will see a row of boxes and one will be marked "completed listings" or items, or auctions, etc....
If you click that box it will show what coins like those have sold for. Now gradeing and desire for coin can drive bids up so this is just is just a basic guide..... but it can give you some idea what your coins MAY be worth.

p.s. You must be registered and signed in to use this option on ebay.
