I just came across an 1854 Liberty Head Gold Dollar Type 1 in the collection of coins I have had since I was very young. I have never had the chance to do anything with the collection until now. The coin has been holed over the mint mark, so the question is, is there any other way to determine the mint without the mint mark. I realize the coin isn't worth much with a hole in it, but I'm curious. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Deffinitly not an expert by any means, but if the hole is dead center under the wreath than it will be impossible to be 100% sure of the mint origin, however the fact that someone put the hole there may mean that it didn't have a mint mark to begin with......if thats the case in VF condition its worth 200 according to Red Book, but like you said I'm not sure what the hole does to your value but I would guess that the hole was drilled because there was no mint mark......someone will most likely chime in here sooner or later that knows ALOT more than me....still a nice coin to have in the collection.....post a pic if possible id like to see one
Rest in Peace

There may be die characteristics that can determine the difference, but I am not sure. We're talking very subtle things that are difficult to figure out. However, there's only a very low chance that it's a C or D mint.

Thanks, and yes it's a shame when someone does this. It was likely done years ago with no idea that it would ever be worth more than face value. But I'm still curious as this is the second coin in this old ignored collection that has become interesting. (See my other post under World Coins and Commemorativesthe about the coin from Greece.)

I don't think there would be any way to tell what MM it was since the hole is where the Mm would be. it would really stink if it were a C or D MM though, but doesn't matter now because it would be impossible to determine unless you could see some of it beside the hole
