Hey everybody. I'm new to the forum, so please be patient with me. I bought this 1877 Trade dollar for a very reasonable price around Christmas two years ago. I can't tell if it's a fake or not. I'd really appreciate anyone's input and tips for telling the real ones from the fakes. Thanks a lot! gdwstp1971

to CCF. These Trade dollars have been heavily counterfeited and this appears to be one. Compare your coin to the attached images that I shamelessly ripped off off Heritage's web site. IMO - I do not think yours is authentic. Notice the details - rocks on the obverse and the feathers on the reverse do not have the same details.

I would recommend getting an accurate weight on it, that eliminates >95% of fakes.

Unfortunately, I also agree your coin is a fake. Check out the bottom tips of the LIBERTY ribbon from Miss Liberty's left hand. See how the real ones curl back nicely to the right? Yours does not do that. (This is just one of the many obvious clues...) There is no doubt that your coin is fake. I'm sorry! but to the Forum!

The reverse edge tipped me off the most.

The Trade dollars are often counterfeited, that is why I will most likely buy a slabbed one for my Type set.

Old counterfeit? Looks like it could be one of those copper/nickel ones from the period

Okay. Thanks for the 'welcome' messages, and thanks to everyone who replied to my inquiry. It's good to get the opinions of more experienced collectors like yourselves. My suspicion has been confirmed. Fortunately, I only paid about $30 for this one a couple of years ago, so I'm not too broken-up about it.

Yeah, beware of any 'too good to be true' offer since it usually is.

I am new to the community. I have recently discovered 5 counterfeit Trade dollars. This may not work for every fake but I discovered my fakes by placing a magnet next to them. Every coin jumped to the Magnet. Real Silver is not attracted to a magnet. I will never go to a coin show without my trusty magnet again.
