This set cost me about $23, shipping included. It has about .9 oz of silver. What to do with it? The case is probably PVC or some other type of nasty plastic. It smells just like a shower curtain! Here are my options. 1. Keep it as is since it is a piece of numismatic history (a "Souvenir of Aruba"). I am putting together a set from Aruba and that is the search term I used in ebay which found this thing. 2. Take it apart, put the coins into 2 X 2s and store with the packaging. 3. Take it apart, keep the packaging and put it into the deepest darkest corner of my closet and deal with the coins separately. I'd like to keep the 1 Gulden and 1/10 Gulden, maybe put the rest on ebay to recoup my costs.

personally I would open it and place in 2x2s. However, that decision is really yours and how you would best enjoy them notwithstanding whether or not the plastic is safe or not. I have no clue but my guess is it that is not safe over the long run. This isn't a mint set per se, it appears to have been assembled from separate pieces and for me that beckons 2x2s and into my album.

The silver coins seem to have a green hue to them that may mean the PVC is getting to them (unless it's the pic).

Nice... I love coins from Netherlands Antilles, very low mintage levels overall!! The green is most deffinetly because of the package, they are infamous for it... earlier Dutch and colony's sets. I see however that there are all kind of different coins in it, not only Netherlands Antilles, but also Curacao. Also you have coins from Wilhelmina as of Juliana, so it makes me think this is a selfmade set by someone.
The coins looks still very nice though, UNC/FDC(fleur de coin) the green patina/residue shouldn't effect the price if I'm correct.. But you won't get it off, and if you touch them ,you will see it really good!
If you want to know the 2010/2011 catalogue prices, just give a reply with the dates and I will post them ;)

Get them out and see if the acetone - distilled water - hair dryer - new 2x2 routine makes them happier. Poor coins are being poisoned and are suffocating in there.

Alternatively, you could put the set over in the "Selling" forum, I can think of at least one forum crawler who'd be interested in purchasing it!

Kingz,
I have a decent sized collection of coins from the Netherlands Antilles and I was wondering if you could tell me where I could get a decent price for them. I do own the "muntalmanak" but I found that dealers often try to pay a lot less than what is estimated as "fair" value.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on the matter

Yeah, get those pieces out of that PVC deathtrap and into an acetone bath. You don't have to worry about the packaging in this case - that's an aftermarket holder, not any kind of "original" mint packing (note the coins are of different eras).
Of course, the quandary arises when the packaging is original mint-issued scuzzy PVC... e.g., the South African mint sets (the UNCs, not the Proofs). I personally would only keep the coins in such bad plastic if the premium on intact sets was significant... And honestly, when the packaging is PVC, few serious coin people have any desire to pay good $$ for slimed coins... so I doubt there would be much premium in such a case. "Originality" is only good when it's not ruining the product.

Hey Jay, I like that you collect Neth. Antilles coins, I do too myself.. You are correct that the values in the Muntalmanak are moslty a lot higher then you can actually buy or sell them for unfortuantely! I see that in many Dutch and other European coins, instead of USA for example..! But I am convinced that they are underrated coins, and mostly the mintage is not high from Neth Antilles... around 500.000 or so. But they are pretty cheap to get I noticed indeed, I try local Dutch coin forums and websites like Marktplaats.nl and or ebay. I try to buy them in small / big lots, mostly for a few euro's. If you have any more specific questions or anything I will be gladly to try and help you!

I disassembled the set, used acetone, and kept everything except the 2 1/2 Gulden (a date I've already got). I sold the 2 1/2 gulden for about $28 on ebay. Pretty good transaction there!! Wish they all turned out this great.
