Say a wealthy relative of yours died and left you $2000 in their will after the taxman commeth. The only stipulations were that you had to spend the $$$ on one or two US coins. What would you choose? Also, his ghost will haunt you if you try to buy anything lower then VF.

Will be fun to see some responses.

I'd say I would go with a 1914-D Lincoln around AU would fit the bill.

NumisMedia says...

1909S-VDB (VF-20) at $1180 and a 1914-D (XF-40) at $920.

I know that is $100 over, but I would either hunt for the bargain or overpay on a VF graded 1914-D. Maybe I could find an XF~30 for the right price.

Personally, I think I would try to find an AU 1839-O reeded bust half.

My choices would be a type 1 proof seated half, a proof barber half or a Hawaiian commemorative.

I would go with some quality early U.S. silver. That area will never lose its appeal.
Even though there is plenty to choose from, your modest budget will not stretch very far.

to be honest I have a new found respect for a classic head large cent in problem free condition in AU or above condition. I am not saying this will increase in value allot in a short time but they are very very hard to locate and to be honest not sure 2k would actually buy one in that condition any longer. This was the ONE coin when I was actively and frantically trying to finish the 7070 album that took me the longest to locate and one of the single coins I paid the most for when I did find one

1908S and 1909S Indian Head cents in MS63.
Now trying for a completed set of those in all MS grades so that would help.

Carl. Why do you think the 09s IHC. Is so undervalued? Just b/c there are fewer collectors compaired to Lincolns?

Can I get a nice Indian Head $10.00 Gold Eagle for that much and a $5.00 Indian Five Dollar with the change?
If so, I think a nice pair from around 1908 or 1909 in AU58 would suit me.

True. Notariety and popularity of any coin makes the value what it is. That is why I picked the Indian Head coins. The 09S Indian has 309,000 minted and the 09S VDB is 484,000 yet thousands different in value due to popularity.
Examples of this are the famous 1955 Lincoln Double Die. There are double dies of almost every year yet none are no where close in value as that 55 due to popularity.
Many, many coins are like that.

I like this combo as well; however, the "his ghost will haunt you if you try to buy anything lower then VF" part scares me!
