And then you decide to keep the coin.
I have improved this one some time ago and decided to sell it on ebay and made these pics.
Then I decided to keep it.
Are you able to find out what makes this coin special?

There appears to be something that resembles a detached hand, pointing down at the 7 o'clock position, near the rim that I don't see on the 'normal' picture.

No, you are not there yet.
The coin has a particularity that has so far only been known for the 20 centimes and 1 franc coin of that year.

Is it the way the ribbon overlaps the pearls on the first one ? Sometimes the wear on a coinmakes things difficult to discern.

I notice that the collar rim is thicker wider/flattened on the first coin.

The Paris mintmark, "A", is noticeably larger on the first coin.

Is it because she's making a duckface?

It's still there, it's just worn.

I can't tell. Is it a die crack or something?

I have experienced this myself, I am set on selling a coin on ebay and then it looks so much more appealing when I look at the picture that I decide to keep it.

I took a picture of a 1909-S to sell on ebay....and found it had a weak vdb on the back, so yes I can relate to the title of this post.

The leaf pattern after the word "Fraternite" seems to be different in the two coins? Sorry, I have no knowledge of French coins.

The chief engraver changed his symbol during the year 1850 a little bit.
The ear on the head of the dog (right of the mint mark A) has been made longer.
On the 20 centimes coin from 1850 both varieties are well known and no big difference in value.
On the 1 franc coin the longer ear variety is much rarer and for the 50 centimes coin no long ear has been known so far.
Without the large pics I would never have noticed.

Wow...I needed to look closer to notice that difference.
