I sent the seller the following:
Hi, I'm sorry to inform you but this coin is a fake. There are numerous diagnostics wrong with this coin, including the numbers on the date, the hair, etc. You should, for the sake of the hobby, remove this auction so that someone doesn't get burned on this.

Seller's response:
this coin is authentic and has been passed down from generation to generation and I feel ofended that you would consider it fake

Oh and also note that the seller, under return policy, says "No returns accepted"

Thank you all for your comments! I guess I was just wishing it was real and that I found it first. Truth is, if it were real, it probably would have been gone before I'd even seen it. Like the saying goes, "if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is." Thanks to all who pointed out inconsistencies in the details. No doubt the person who bid $1,000 for this 'thing' on e-bay will be sorely disappointed. Maybe since it is not real, he or she will be reimbursed despite the fact that the seller stated that there would be no returns accepted(?).

I don't know how to insert a pix directly: I can only insert a link to the pix...

Here's a pix of a slabbed-62 1916 SL quarter a friend of mine bought latter part of 2010. It's described as a typical weak strike. My understanding is that 1916's are typically weakly struck whereas 1917 type I's aren't. I'd love to get a really nice SL quarter of any date but one reason I moved out of US & into cheap foreign are the high prices for US. I do have an EF+ 1923 I paid $6 for but that's my only nice SL 25c.

Well here's what happened. I reported it to ebay. The listing was ended by the seller (not sure if it was because ebay forced it or not). But then seller re-listed the itme for 1 day only and I missed it and the item sold for $2900.

oh well, I guess somebody got ripped off of $2900. But it's their own fault for buying such an expensive coin w/o doing their homework. It's a very risky scenario. Good thing is, even if the seller lists no returns if the buyer complains then ebay will usually side with them and the seller will have no choice but to accept the return.

mdh157, you are correct..the seller is responsible for authenticity regardless of the return policy and even if he would state that he is not sure.

mycrob: I noticed that the item went mysteriously missing-in-action from ebay, but was surprised to see that the seller removed it. I did see that it popped back up later, but didn't realize that it sold for $2,900. Hope they get there money back.

Thank you mdh157, and Maineman750 for the info about e-bay's policy on such matters. I was hoping someone would know something about this.

Gallienus: I couldn't open the link to your picture, but I appreciate the effort.
Rest in Peace

I just hope the buyer realizes it is fake, and tries to get his money back. Some buyers live in dreamworld and will tell themselves the coin is genuine to justify their foolish purchase only to find out years later that they are hosed when trying to sell it. I hope this doesn't play out that way. :-(

But, just a small part of me feels like, if the buyer has no idea what he should be looking for in a coin like this, he gets what he deserves...Is that wrong?

I just got an email from ebay saying the listing was removed. I checked completed listings and there is no record there of the coin just selling for $2900 so I think the buyer has been saved!
