Can I assume this is a 1913 or are there others without the line.

Thanks

Correct! As a kid we found plenty of these. At the time, (early 60's) there was an acid available that when placed on the date area would bring out the date. Of course the coins wouldn't be worth much.
I haven't been involved with numismatics in many decades and there may still be such a product available.
Rest in Peace

The product is still around. It is called Nic-A-Date. Many ebay Buffalo nickels are advertised as "restored" or "acid" date nickels. They should sell for 10% or less than their unrestored counterparts. Some restorations are good and some shabby. As in everything, don't pay too much. I've even seen some 1916/16 and 1918/17 D restored dates go for big money.

It's hard to tell for sure from the photo, but it looks to me like someone may have already used chemicals on this one.

If a date can be determined using other diagnostics, I would strongly recommend against acid treating the date!

Thanks numismo, that was the name of it. Wasn't there also a product called Nic-A-Lene? Maybe it was a coin cleaner.
Hard to believe that was 45 years ago!

nic-a-date was the acid (also a different acid for silver)
nic-a-lene was a cleaner

Is there anyway way of knowing if this coin has had some chemicals used on it?

A mottled or sandpaper texture on the coin can be a giveaway.

Nic-a-date works... are you trying to sell or keep for yourself?

If you are ok with just adding it to the collection then I might think about keeping it, at least as a hole filler until another is found...
