I changed banks last month to avoid newly instated checking fees. (I am not going to pay a bank for them to keep my money...but that's a different story.)

When signing up at the new bank, I mentioned that I was a coin collecter. The banker said she had some half dollars and dollars if I wanted them. I said YES!

Here is what I got:

8 Ikes

a roll of halves

3 SBA dollars

I have two questions, also.
1. Why do I see so many half dollars that are painted red or blue like the one in the second picture?

2. The 3 SBA dollars are abnormally shiny. Could they be plated? The edges are not plated because I can see the copper.

1. Some companies placed coins in vending machines themselves, and when they would empty the change, they could tell profit from theirs since they colored theirs. That's what I heard, anyway.

2. They could be, or they could even be proofs. We would need better pics to be sure.

bmanofnbc,
No, it's a '73. The oldest in the bunch is a '71.

That looks like a 3 on the 3rd from right...can't be silver.

And yes those SBA's do look like they could be proofs...better pics needed....nice score !

I don't think those are proofs. Pretty sure the middle one is 1 79D. Maybe plated or polished?

The dates on the SBAs are 1979-P, 1979-D, and 1999-P.

On the SBA's; don't think they are proofs because I see no cameo and I would put that '99 in a 2x2.

I was once told they were painted red and blue while others were left alone and place in order to make the image of the American flag. Weather its true or not I have no clue, but if it was done it sounds like it could look nice.

Back when I was working my way through college I was a bartender.
We had a bunch of red quarters that I would give out to the patrons for free jukebox tunes.
When the owner of the machine emptied the coin box he would return the quarters to me to
give out again. They looked exactly like that Kennedy; good memories.
