Hey all, I would first like to thank all of you for your insight and advice on so many topics. It really gets a fairly new collector like myself excited and teaches me a great deal about this hobby! I have recently saved up enough money to buy my first gold coin! It has taken a while and I really do not want to (read can not afford to) make a mistake. So, my question is, should I go with a slabbed Buffalo gold coin or a St. Gauden? I want a higher grade slab and am leaning towards the Saint for reasons of beauty, history, and darn it, it's a St. Gauden's! Keeping in mind that this is my first truly LARGE purchase of a single coin. I guess what I really am asking is which one, in ya'lls humble opinion, will maintain/go up in value? Any advice is appreciated!

If you are asking as a coin collector, the answer has to be the St. Gauden Double Eagle. If you are asking as someone who just wants to own some very good gold, then the answer would be the Buffalo, as there are none finer. So it comes down to which one are you at the time of purchase. Good luck

I would certainly go for the Saint, but then I have an intense dislike of bullion "coins". Whatever you get, enjoy it !!!

I would go for the buffalo...and I have.
It'a the first issue of an amzingly beautiful coin. Go to the shop ..look at them side by side and decide for yourself. The color of the golden buffalo with the hand tooled background is breathtaking.
I love the new buffs and I hope the series runs for 20 years!

This is a tricky one I like the St Gaudens and the history behind it but I LOVE the buffalo design. (sigh) I am jealous because my budget wont strech that far at the moment and I think I would go.... St Gaudens mainly for the history

I'd go with the saint. If you decide to sell it down the line, you'll probably get better resale. Also, if you like the design, then just go for it! If you have the cash, go for an MS-63 by PCGS- a lot of coin for the money. I think they're going at around $685 (or they were the last time I saw one at my dealer's place last week).
Ultimately, it's up to you.
*I can't predict the market, so any reviews about resale are purely speculation.*

You really can't go wrong with either. I own both. I love both. But neither one will make you rich so if you are looking in increased value over time ..one coin won't do it..so buy a buff now and a Saint next year or buy a Saint now and a buff next year it really doesn't matter as long as it's not fake.
Going to vegas and playing Roulette with a buzz is a mistake...buying either of these is just buying a hunk of yellow metal that costs about 3 months worth of groceries or 15 tanks full of gas.

I love the Saints. To me it is and was the most beautiful American coin ever minted. Mike

St. Gaudens - already has value beyond bullion spot.
New Buffalo - just bullion.
If I had a choice I would take a Gaudens anyday over the buffalo gold coin. If you really want one of the buffalos for nostalgia sake buy one of the silver ones with any money you might have left over from buying the best US coin ever produced IMHO.

Hi all , as usual there are several issues going on in this thread which I would like to address separately... First, to JCook54...It seems like you are making your first priority the question of appreciation in value of your investment, and that is always a good priority...Consider this...Every Buffalo (almost)is going to be maintained in very high MS68-70 condition, or Proof68-70 condition. that's hundreds of thousands of copies, right? So then, look at the pCGS and NGC population reports on the MS63 and higher St Gaudens $20 of various dates...what you see are the survivors of the meltdowns, and it's not too likely any large hoards significant to affect the market will surface. This comparison clearly indicates, as many have pointed out in the thread above, that the Saint will be the best investment The second point is the issue of which is nicer, or more beautiful, the Saint or the Buff? The answer is always, collect what you like! Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I have a proof Buff because it fits into one of my collections, and I don't have a Saint because it currently doesn't fit. And then there is the point AuldeFartte made about bullion coins...many consider them less desirable or collectable. I have thought about this point for a long time, and have decided it really shouldn't be an issue. Let's face it, the Morgan silver dollar is a bullion coin, and for that matter, the St. Gaudens $20 functioned like one as well, sitting around in bank vaults backing up gold notes. Those are two of the most beautiful US coins ever. That's probably a hot button and possibly should be a new thread, but I'm new and just learning to fumble around here. all the best to everyone Dennis

Main answer.....
Put up a poll, its better. I would personally say the Saint, because of its beauty.
Bufallo is just a scrap of gold.
TKC!

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. I have purchased a couple of the gold buffaloes and am now looking at the St Gaudens. I agree with fastfords with respect to the investment aspect. Since there is such a limited number of St Gauden's available, in the long run I think they will be worth more. But, if you buy several buffaloes for the same price as one St Gauden, which ones will be worth more? The price of gold will be a key, but absent that, I think a true, almost 100 year old gold coin will be worth more in the long run. You can buy a nice one in any number of years. I have been researching this for the last week looking at ebay auctions, mintage numbers, PCGS prices, population reports where available, etc. and it seems that the jump from MS64 to MS65 is quite dramatic. MS 63's are closer in price to bullion buffaloes, so it depends on how much you have to spend. I would buy as high a graded St Gauden as you can afford, since in the long run, these will increase more in value on a percentage basis. Now keep in mind this is just my opinion, and I am only just beginning my long journey here. Here are some sites for you to look over to help either confuse you or clarify things: http://www.coinfacts.com/double_eag..._gaudens.htmhttp://www.bestcoin.com/st-gauden-2...lar-gold.htmhttp://coins.heritageauctions.com/And to see how many negative or neutral rating an ebay seller has, check out this site: http://toolhaus.org/I've seen some pretty stuffpy coin sellers with this tool. Some good ones too.

I agree with fastford also. The buffalo is a nice looking bullion coin, I just have trouble paying the large over spot charge for the thing. My preference would be the St Gaudens

shucks...just keep squirreling away the dollars and save up for the crown jewel in any gold collection ..the new reverse proof. It's the hottest coin on the market today even more so now that they have started shipping. Much more rare that the buffalo and the Saint.
