The saddest thing is that many people have bought a similar "deal" on that gold coin set, and it hasn't been released yet.

Let's see, 3 oz of gold at less than $600 per oz equals less than $1800 of value for $3550? and it will probably get bid up before it ends...and even the usmint must be happy as it pockets $800 from the original buyer... PT Barnum would have a chuckle over this!!

The Mint can be criticized for good reason for their shananagans, but I have some thoughts.I believe that the gold for these coins must come from ore that was mined in the last year,in the U.S.A..It must cost quite a bit to obtain this. Also, I feel better knowing that this gold is not from past generations, where, who knows what, was done to obtain it.

Hi Sandpaper, that's a good observation. Gold has been "recycled" frequently in the past, and often in less than nice circumstances. An example that comes to mind is the later issue Swiss 20 Franc Helvetias...I read that they were made from gold the Third Reich (Nazi Germany) deposited, which was confiscated from the Jewish communities as they were rounded up for transport to the concentration camps, and various other nefarious sources which usually involved killing or looting.

All of which reinforces the fact that there is a lot of history in our coins...as for the recently mined US gold, isn't that a stipulation of the Gold Buffalo program? I did not think the Gold Eagle program had any such restriction as to the source of the gold?

I get a kick out of these smilies!!!

all the best,
Dennis

We can never be positive about where the gold we own has come from. Or any diamonds in our jewellery for that matter. Or any antiques or artifacts. Or any statuary made from amber/jade/alabaster. Or any African or indigenous pieces of art. The list could go on forever. If we truly knew where our precious items came from, or from whom they were stolen, or who suffered due to them, we would never be able to live with owning them.

Well spoken, Snooba... goes right to the matter of whose hands have our circulated coins passed through. We mustn't get depressed by overdwelling on it, but just to keep in mind these artifacts do each have a history, and respect it, is all we can do.

Whew, this got deep!!!

Not always so serious.

Yes Fastfords, you are correct.I was confused. It is the Buffalo program with this stipulation. I knew this but I guess with all the products, offered,I messed up on which topic this was.

I think you need to say which 'anniversary set' you are talking about when you say it has been sold out. There are currently more than the one set. As I understand it only the three coin gold set has been closed.

The sets are going for almost $4,000 on ebay now. There are a couple that have 4 days left that are in the $3,700 range, but I bet they go higher. I saw a two set offer for $7,000 earlier this afternoon and now it's $8,000. This is crazy!
