Almost all plastics are derived from oil. Originally, the reason plastics were developed is because there was a lot of unusable waste material left over after the refining of crude oil for use as fuel.

That is not the case any more. Plastics technology has developed in it's own right, and now the world can't do without them.

It is true that most plastics are still made of petrochemicals, but more and more plastics are being made of corn, beans, and other biomasses as polymer technology advances. I feel that you will see less plastics made from crude oil byproducts as refining techniques and get better and oil supplies start to dwindle. Already there are at least two companies mining landfills for waste plastic, cooking it down, and making a higher quality gasoline than can be had at the pump. With that said, I would worry more about the rising cost of grains and related crops than pocket pages or 2x2's.

Plastic in landfills isn't hurting anything at the moment. Why don't they process that plastic continent floating in the ocean?

bigfredd: Most probably the cost for sweeping the ocean is too high to make a profit out of it.

I would think throwing a net would be cheaper than digging up tons of rubbish, then having to sort it. Or how about an on-site processor?
