It looks like it is from a die crack in the wheat ear. Which is a form of Cud I believe. Will see what others think. IMHO

That sure is a big chunk. I thought Cuds were on the rim. Not 100% sure.

I believe that it is the same effect as with the BIE cents. Where there was a crack between the B and I of liberty on the cent.

Hi,

These are called die chips. They are fairly common on cents of the fifties. Cuds involve the rim of the coin.

Thanks,
Bill

die crack - A split in the die where there is no loss of metal. Shows as a raised irregular line - like lightning - on the coin.

die chip - A small piece missing from the die. looks like a glob or hump of metal with sharp edges on the coin.

die dent - a soft edged raised area - a hump - on a coin. Comes from something hitting the die.

die gouge - damage to the die usually caused by some sort of tool used to scrape something off the die. Sharp edged and usually straight.

die break - extensive die cracks with missing metal - evidence that a die is beginning to break apart.

broken die - complete breakage of the die - end to end crack, missing metal - a die falling apart.

cud - a piece missing off the edge of the die.
