I received this one in the mail today, and am very pleased! It has solid cartwheel luster in the protected areas. Totally original and dirty lookin. I'm bummed about the weakness on Liberty's front hair, but that is common on this date. Opinions?(no cheating if you already know the grade..

XF-45 because of luster, assuming the weakness in areas is a striking characteristic. 1837 is VF-25 IMO. It looks like the 1834 was dipped in the past, as is such with a lot of classic gold in the XF range that retains so much luster. Or maybe, its just because gold scuffs up a lot easier...not used to that.

I'm going to guess 45 and 30 for the 1834 and 1837 respectively. What would market value be on those, if you don't mind me asking? The Classic Head is the oldest gold type I'll ever have a shot at. Anyway, nice coins. I love the look of the 1837.

1834 - XF-40
1837 - VF-20 on a good day

I do like the luster on the '34

1834: VF-30 (GORGEOUS luster & reverse!)

1837: VF-35 (Even & honest wear both sides)

Thanks for the inputs. Overall, you all are pretty tough graders on my Classic head golds! ICG gave the 1834 XF-45(yay shadow and onebowl), and ANACS had given the 1837 a VF-35(yay Moe). I think the 37 got a bump because the obverse detail is essentially XF imo(you dont see that much hair on a VF example); though the reverse is lower VF. I paid about $560 a piece for them, though I think I got a great deal on the 1834.

I'd agree with the grade on the '34 but ANACS was generous giving the '37 a VF35 grade. I would have guessed 25 on the 1837 and I like it's original look.

I love Classic Head gold also. I was able to pick up this 1834 Quarter Eagle on a Heritage post-auction buy for 10% under Greysheet. It's an NGC AU50.
