Why did the mint sell these sets of the uncirculated gold and silver for $850 and now you can buy the gold uncirculated by itself for $720 and the silver uncirculated for $19.95 from the mint website?

Hmmm...$720 + $19.95 = $739.95....Does the "special" packaging cost over $100?

And now apparently, the W-minted silver eagles can be purchased without buying any of the aniversary sets.

Just curious to see everyone's thoughts on this...Did anyone buy any of these sets?

Seems a little sneaky to me

Interesting question,

For an additional $100.00 you get per mint website:
Each set comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is packaged in a handsomely designed box that was custom-made for this collection. Each box features a high-gloss, lacquered finish with a textured leather pad. Every set will also include a detailed booklet highlighting both of these American Eagle Coin Programs as well as the history of gold and silver around the world and in the United States.

The question is can you purchase the packaging separately on ebay and sell it as anniversary set, which is morally wrong, but it is ebay...

Here is another reason to pay for the anniversary set, especially when grading via NGC:

Because some of these coins are also available individually from the US Mint, special instructions must be followed in order for coins to qualify for this pedigree. Coins must remain in the sealed shipping boxes used by the US Mint, and the entire unopened package must be forwarded on to NGC for certification. NGC must open these boxes in order for the coins to qualify for the EAGLE 20TH ANNIVERSARY.

PCGS has the same thing going on, the package must remain sealed to qualify for the 20th anniversary label. The reverse proof will always be available for the 20th anniversary label because they are not available separately but the others must be in the sealed package and since ALOT of people opened their box before the press release these 20th Ann. sets are going to be hard to come by in my opinion

The decrease in cost is simple to explain and has little to do with the cost of the box. It's economics.

As you may or may not know, the cost of gold fluctuates. The mint paid more for the gold to mint the anniversary sets then it did to print the singles. It's not sneaky at all. It's just a fact of life when dealing with bullion sales. Sometimes you pay more and sometimes you pay less.
