I started collecting a year ago next month, and within the past year I completed my nickel collection (1938-present) through roll searching and picking up a few from a local shop. A few months ago I decided to do myself one better by completing a BU Jefferson set in my new Dansco. The first page of my Dansco is about 30% complete, with primarily War Nickels missing. A local shop has BU War Nickels unslabbed for $12 each (Just for clarification these are beautiful War Nickels with great luster). Is this a fair price for most BU War Nickel dates and mints?

I think you can find bu warnickels for cheaper than $12 each. Look around and perhaps check ebay. Thats seems pricey.

Agreed $12 dollars sounds like a lot... But if you are willing to pay that, then thats what they are worth to you.

I remind us all that a discussion on pricing without the context of grade ... and in this case step detail ... is dicey and just going in circles.

The OP says

Perhaps this is a great deal .... the term "BU" means nothing in the context of modern coin grading and pricing.

Check out the current Numismedia FMV pricing for Jefferson war silver nickels .... at MS65 and better they are all $20+ coins.

What if a few of these coins at the dealer were MS65+ Full Steps (FS) ... then the prices can go real crazy.

For example ... in my collection I have a 1944-S PCGS slabbed MS67FS Jefferson .... I could sell it tomorrow for $1300 if I wished to get rid of it.

I suggest the OP make a determination of the actual grade ... check for step detail ... and reference a few reliable price guides to make some informed decisions.

We are here to help if grading is not yet a strong suit.

I think that's a fair price, it they are in fact choice coins. But I would cherry pick for sure.

As already noted BU means little. There are many grades of what is called MS which basically is BU or sort of. In most price guides they list those War Nickels from MS-60 to MS-65 or at least in the Red Book. And if you look in that Red Book you would notice there is a substancial difference in prices for different dates also.
In AU to MS-60 you should really find them for much less.

I paid $90 for my set of 11 which averages about $8.18 per coin.

I believe they would grade out in the MS-62 to MS-64 range with one or two having a shot at 65.
