I posted elsewhere that I bought a margarine container of small cents a few years back. My knowledge of the coins of the USA is fleeting, but there were some interesting finds in the margarine tub... a 1901, 1871 (corroded) and this... (rest of the interesting finds were Canadian coins)
The clip is perfect in terms of fitting another US penny from 1901 in there.

Is that a date variety? There looks as though there may be remnants of other punches on that one. Remember, until 1909, those digits were punched individually onto the dies. IIRC, anyway.
Do you see the bottom of the 9 and the bottom-left of the 7? If you can just take a straight-on closeup of the entire date, do that. These are being classified, now, like the VAMs for the dollars. Take a look here: http://www.fly-inclub.org/1907varpage.htm .
