I recently purchased an MS Shield nickel in a PCGS holder. After I took it home and looked at it more closely, I noticed the spot shown below.

Shield-Nickel-Spot----Verdigris?--PVC?

Is this verdigris? Or maybe PVC damage? Or something entirely different? What is the danger of just leaving it?

I saw an article recently on PCGS's spot removal service (http://news.coinupdate.com/pcgs-spo...ervice-0701/), and I'm tempted to give that a try if this spot might damage the coin over time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks like a simple, light verdigris spot. Store the slab properly and don't worry about it. If it bothers you, sell the coin and buy a new one.

Out of couriousity what was it graded as? MS is a wide variety so if only a MS-60 or -61, I wouldn't worry about that little spot. If something like MS-66 I agree to just get rid of it since that obviously bothers you. Resending for that spot to be removed could cost more than it's worth.

If I understood the spot removal service... if it's already graded, you only cover shipping costs. An MS Shield nickel should be worth shipping charges.

Thanks for the replies. It's an MS-64, and a nice one at that. The spot really doesn't bother me and is not very noticeable, but I am interested to know if the spot will get bigger or damage the coin if it's not removed. If it will just sit there as a harmless mark, then I'll probably just leave it as is.

Based on the Coin Update article, I think the PCGS spot removal is free other than shipping both ways.

I dont think that the spot should get any worse. Although I would inquire a little more about the spot removal service, and see what is involved...
