I bought this from someone on Dutch ebay, and it was in the token section... The description was very strange, I guess he thought it was a token of some sort... But luckily I knew it's an old coin from Brazil (maybe for counterstamp coinage? ) When I saw the "clipping" in the coin, I thought it might be a counterfeit which can be more rare / expensive... So can anyone tell me some info on the coin, and a grading would be welcome also! As I have no idea what the affect is on the badly readable date, which is 1832R I think.

It looks like post mint damage to me, but this is not my area of expertise.

It appears to be a damaged genuine coin to me, though as far as I was aware nobody really knows for sure which ones are genuine and which ones are high-quality counterfeits in this series.

I'm not sure why you would think the "clipping" is a sign that it's counterfeit?

thanks guys for commenting, and sap I was just freestyling in my thoughts, I have no idea what this clipping means.
I thought I read somewhere before that some counterfeit coins are clipped, so anyone can see it's a counterfeit... but I could be wrong, Actually I know nothing about these coins, beside the fact that the series were also made with counterstamps of 40 Reis if I'm correct.

But how should I grade this coin, and what would be the approximate value of the coin?
Looking forward to some info :)

I would grade it "damaged, VF details". It looks as if the coin's gotten caught in a guillotine or some other straight-cutting device. As to why, I don't know. I don't think it was a deliberate attempt at denoting it counterfeit - it's my understanding that the people of the day simply didn't care whether the coins were counterfeit or not. I would assume it's simply gotten caught in machinery of some kind by accident.
