My appologies if this has been explained lately, but I did a quick search and didn't find anything. Anyways, I got about 20-25 rolls of the '09 "Formative Years" cents from the bank while they were hot. I still have them. I know I probably should have sold them while I could, but for whatever reason I didn't. So I've heard a lot about the error/variety where Lincoln's hand has got an extra finger etc...and I'm wondering if this was only on Philly minted coins or Denver as well. I live in TX so of course every roll of mine are D's.
If there were some D's included, then would you guys recommend busting these rolls open? If D's were not included, then what would you guys recommend I do with these? Are they still holding a premium (were they ever if not for the errors)? Or should I put them back in closet?

Okay, first thing's first. You are using the term 'error' and 'variety' interchangeably, and they aren't. You are likely talking about the numerous doubled die reverse dies known for the year, and those would be known as 'die varieties' - not 'errors'. The difference is enough that collectors for the two often don't mix. It's like Ford and Chevy.

So..what to do? Well, there are nearly 100 completely different doubled dies known for 2009 cents, only 9 of which are on D mint LP2 cents. All of those are minor.

Whether you should open them? Well, they aren't worth a heck of a lot anyway...rolls sell for around $1 each - about double face value. Sticking them in a closet probably won't do you any good either. Too many people saved these for them to have much value within the next 30 years or so. Well, enough that they would be worth substantially more saving them.

Your chances of finding a doubled die in them? Pretty slim. Should you break them open? Why not...they aren't really worth much.

Where can you find photos of what to be looking for? Right here:

Just enter '2009' in the first 'year' box and click submit.

CherryPickers Guide will include 6 of the formative year die varities in the 2012 book. The most popular variety is the skeleton finger. I believe 4 of the other varities were found in non-mint wrapped rolls (ie the type of roll you have). Search them thar rolls.

There is all kind of doubled finger variations. If you look on ebay you will see tons of them for sale,

One double finger variation is very well doubled and separated. I bid on that one and it did $31 sales price on ebay but that was last year when they were first being noticed,

The smaller variations with less dramatic doubling I don't see them sell for very much like maybe $1 -$3 bucks each
when you look at complete auctions

Th log cabin cents have some doubleddies they seem to sell for 5-20$ each , but manthe doubling is so microscopic on soe of them its hard to even see it
