Hi, If someone pass here before the end of the auctions, I was wondering if this one was safe (not sure I'll bid on it, price is high imho, and I don't feel that I'll miss that one) : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_582wt_1141Checked the shield side, here is the doubts I had : * Some letters have issues : the top 1 in hispan, the E in et, the E and X in rex, the D in ferdnd ... * The color of the coin maybe. Any comment ? Thanks :)

Hello MathieuMa, First let me say I an NOT the expert on picking out "Real" Pillars, I collect the fakes. So let me see if I can tell you why this may NOT be a fake. Often the fakes are just too perfect and this coin has nice charactor w/o being perfect. The weight and size seem good, and the dealer sells alot of older coins, has a high rateing, and offers a guaruntee! Yes the color is odd, but it looks to me more like a coin that was cleaned and is now being left to re-age. The coin does have some odd wear areas to it, the globes, the crown on the shield side, the "MF" in the assayer mark. There also seems to be a couple deep/short scratches in the fields, sometimes this is where a fake was tested to see if it was silver plated copper/brass.
Now some of the things that make me think it may be a very good, older counterfeit: The coin does have some odd wear areas to it, the globes, the crown on the shield side, the "MF" in the assayer mark. There also seems to be a couple deep/short scratches in the fields, sometimes this is where a fake was tested to see if it was silver plated copper/brass. The right side "M-O" for Mexico mint has some damage/deformed to the "O"? There is an odd line under the "4" in the date? And the "S" in "HISPAN" is very odd shaped.
I ask the seller if he could post a picture of the edge so we will see if he can get it on befor ethe end of the auction,(Not sure why dealers DON'T put a pick of the edge on their auctions......unless it is a fake!).

OK, I'll play. Doing this to learn how to tell what is fake and what is not. I'm very new to the field and want to see how my read stacks up. Coin one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_582wt_1141Except for a couple of scratches (tests?) the fields are too clean. The milled edging looks like it cuts into the coin. The E in REX doesn't bother me too much but it is clumsy. My guess: fake. Coin two: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...:WNA:US:1123Found some pics on this. Gilboy M-8-46. and http://www.columnarios.com/pillars/...-MF-3211.jpg. This coin matches pretty well. I have no idea what happened to the top. If it was corrosion, it shouldn't weigh out. My guess: I don't know but I wouldn't buy it. It would be great if someone corrects my impressions.

Both coins you refer to seem to have been removed - did you happen to copy the pictures?
