I'm trying to learn about one of the next items on my hit list. How would you grade this half? I don't think it quite hits the vf+ range, but looks really nice nonetheless. Is that a reasonable price range for the coin? Thanks. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:IT

I would grade it at F-15, but the Liberty is solid. I think a little overpriced. But if ya love it, that's all that matters... Good Luck

With LIBERTY sharp, clasp clearly visible, nice reverse strike for the year and no other problems, wouldn't it hit 20? Trying to learn. Seems like there can be a $40 price difference or so between F and VF. Thanks.

I always go to the US Coin Facts here at CCF (left "click on" menu on every page). Here's the grading criteria for the Capped Bust half dollar: Capped Bust Half Dollar General Grading StandardsG4 Good:LIBERTY discernible on head band. VG8 Very Good:Minimum of three letters in LIBERTY must be clear. F12 Fine:LIBERTY complete. VF20 Very Fine:LIBERTY is sharp. Shoulder clasp is clear. EF40 Extremely Fine:LIBERTY sharp and strong. Hair details show. AU50 About Uncirculated:Slight trace of wear on cap, cheek, and hair above the forehead, claws, wing tops, and the head. MS60 Uncirculated:No trace of wear. Light blemishes. MS63 Select Uncirculated:Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired. You are correct that the shoulder clasp should give this CBH at least a VF-20. I think it's a bit higher than that and would personally give this coin a VF-25 possibly even VF-30. The 2010 RedBook I have lists the 1837 CBH (VF-20) at $120 and EF-40 at $190. So! A VF-25 would certainly be in the ballpark for this coin's price, around $145. I think it's a good deal.

I agree with Moe, 25/30; and very attractive for the grade.

VF-20, not a bad price for this coin.

Yet another VF-25 vote from this oldtimer. The wear is quite uneven. Were one to first see a closeup pic of the strong shield, an XF guess would not be unrealistic. Bust coins are often graded on their stronger points, but that shouldn't be the sole, determining factor, methinks. The subject coin appears pricey to me, given the uneven wear. For under $200, a choice XF might better be had, elsewhere.

Details on the coin are IMO generally at the higher end of VF, but look at the rev. Way too much rim wear for a high VF grade.
Still, my real objection to the coin is lack of luster. Maybe it's just a trick of the camera, but this coin looks dull and lifeless. Nothing that screams (or even whispers) "look at me!"
You can do better.

Thanks everybody. This was very interesting. Opinions ranged from 15 to 30ish. At least I was in the ballpark. If I can get it at a discount, it might be a 7070 candidate for me. If not, more will come along. Thanks, again.

That one's already gone... Looked like a decent deal on a VF coin. I spent quite a bit of time looking for one of these for my 7070. A lot of them seem to have weak rims - I think in part because it was a new striking technique that used a closed collar. A lot of them also have weak strikes on the reverse. I think you are right, though - another will come along eventually!

Yep, VF+ with a typical strike. Estatecoinsales (Dave) is a really reputable seller, I'd recommend him any time. Bought from him before.
