I recently went to my bank to pick up a few random rolls for my nephews 5th birthday so we could teach him about saving money and how fun/challenging it could be to fill albums. I waited in line behind a woman who was holding a box of rolled coin to deposit. I'm not sure if it's the "right" thing to do at a bank but I told her since I was here to get rolled coin that I would just buy hers and save us both a 20 min. wait in line. Needless to say she said yes, we made the exchange and we went our seperate ways. I got home and decided to re-roll one of the nickel rolls and was a little shocked... so I opened them all. This is what I ended up with out of 5 rolls of quarters, 4 rolls of dimes, 5 rolls of nickels, and 10 rolls of pennies.

Quarters:
1 roll of those gold plated Missouri quarters
11 silver quarters - 41d, 48s, 56d, 59d, 61, 61d, 2x 64 and 3x 64d
1929s liberty, what I think is one of those platinum plated State Quarters and 10 Canadian quarters

Dimes:
20 silver dimes - 1936 mercury, 46, 46s, 47, 2x 51, 52, 53d, 58, 59d, 60d, 6x 64, 3x 64d as well as a 1938 canadian dime (prob. silver..?)

Nickels:
5 liberty head - 1887, 2x 05, 06, 11
11 buffalo's - 25s, 26, 28s, 34, 35, 35s, 2x 36, 37d and 2 with no dates.
8 WWII - 3x 43s, 43p, 44s, 45p and 2x 45s,
2 50d
2 canadian 39, 42 and a 1938d 3rd reich 10 pfennig...(kinda odd)

Pennies:
4 rolls of wheats, a few 20's, mostly 40's and 50's and a decent 09vdb
4 indian head - 03, 04, 05, 06
3 old canadian cents - 28, 32, 40

I'd like to think she was mad at her husband and dumping a small collection vs tough times. Had I known I would have gladly thrown her a bit more cash....sheesh

Sooooooooo do I give this to my nephew or just hand him the roll of gold quarters and misc. change and start him from there

I would give him the misc. change and gold quarters, they could be a fun novelty. I would not give him the silver unless you were sure he understood the value and wouldn't spend it on something. Perhaps when he's older you could introduce him to silver coins. But if it was me,I would hold onto the silver.

Nahh.... You haven't done anything wrong here at all....
Whatever reason (and there could be a thousand different ones) these were about to be dumped by the woman....they were about to be the banks for face value so....

As far as the Nephew.... I agree with David here about the Silver....all the rest though, would be a great "starter kit" for him ! ....

Great finds !

Plus, you don't want him to think this happens all the time!

Thanks for the advice guys, I guess I was already leaning toward David and Eaglefoot's suggestions. Good point David, I'd prob. be a little upset if he ended up buying a bag of chips with $20 in silver.

Great Find $$$$
Some Banks Will Not Sell You Customer Rolls
They Bag & Send All Them In, So Someone Else Find Them
I Have Some In My Area That are That Way
I Done That One Time, But Was Not Smart Enough To Ask The Man In Front of Me, If I Could Buy Them From Him He Had a Shoe Box Full
I Was Going To Buy When I Got To The Window, And She Said She Could Not Sell Them To Me.
She Had Already Bag Them

Actually the gold plated Statehood Quarters are numismatic junk and not a good example for a beginner collector. I would roll those back up and take them to the bank - or use them in vending machines. If I were starting up a new collector, I would only want them to receive coins that have some potential to be collectible.

Nice score, dude. I'd keep that, cash in what's worthless, and give that to him.

As long as he understands the value and isn't prone to spending it without telling you, Id still give him a silver quarter or a couple silver dimes so he can have the thrill of holding some silver and maybe keep them as the crown jewels of his collection.

I know that as a child I always felt that silver coins were more appealing then clad or copper coinage, as a child your always fascinated by "treasures" and that sort of thing so It can really help to get them started on collecting.

Coppercoins, even being junk I still think they'd be cool for a 5yr old. I'd probably wait until he's a little older before we got him started on a real collection.

OneBowl, all the wheats are his, xcept maybe the 09vdb :)

I agree with OneBowl... he is 5 you never know he might not take to collecting like you. Better to give him something small, with less value. Then in 5 to 10 years if he has taken to collecting you can give him what you got that day and he will actually enjoy it and it will be a fun story.
