If the lettering is incuse it is most likely caused from another coin being pressed/squeezed against the rim of your coin. Hard to tell form the provided pics to be sure. Lets wait for others to chime in.

Actually there's no way that was caused at the mint - it's damage. These things become apparent with some amount of experience.

Cladhunter was right about your coin, it's the result of it being pressed very hard against another coin.
