Hi, I read a news story in Canoe News online that the Loonies and Toonies will be made a bit lighter plus a change in metal ontent(?) later this year. Also that there will be test coins to test the vending machines, which will all need to be adapted to take the new coins. The older heavier toonies and loonies will be collected and melted down to re-use the metals.

It would be a shame to melt down older coins. Then they're gone forever.

Thanks for posting the link Matchbox. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post news sites links in here, so didn't.

I guess anyone who collects Loonies and Toonies better grab them soon then? "Later this year" sounds kind of vague about when they'll be doing this changeover. Sounds like they'll be better, or more clearly struck too, which would be nice. And yes, a shame to melt coins down, and that also means banks will be soon be scooping the older ones out and sending the, back to the mint every time they get them.

I wonder if a lot of people will suddenly be buying rolls to search if they weren't really collecting them before, because they'll soon be out of circulation?

I also wonder if there will be test coins getting out and becoming a new hot collectors item, like the first P coins test ones

Nah. It just drives up demand for the ones that are left.

I tend to find that most of the circulating Toonies and Loonies that I find are pretty dinged and scratched up. The bigger they are, the harder they fall?
