today got 8 GW gold dollar coins .

I glanced at them for obvious errors. Stacked them up to look at the sides.

I noticed when all the coins are stacked up onverse " face " up
the date 2007 is right side up, except on one coin its upside down

Is this a error ? I dunno I never payed much attention to these dollar coins . I only glance at them never really studied them or cared to untill now.

Thanks

The collar date is added to the planchets before striking. So you have a 50/50 chance of getting one each way.

Yep, everyone waited to see if one side was scarcer than the other, but 50/50 it is.

Just a slight clarification.

The coins are struck and are then passed through the edge lettering press where the lettering is then added.

So the coins are struck first and then the lettering is added.

In the case of the Washington dollars, the coins were struck , dropped into huge bins and then moved to an edge lettering press that was some distance from the coining press.

Today it is an automatic process so that right after the coins are struck they pass on, automatically, to the edge lettering press.

The coins pass through the edge lettering pres with no attention paid to the orientation of the coin, so 50% pass through one way and 50% pass through the other way:-)

Some grading companies label them as A or B depending upon the orientation.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill they probably charge extra for even the "A or B" desigination. Seems like everyone holds their hand out to be filled along the way. I don't waste my time with them. I don't pay any premium for a slabbed coin either. I grade them as I see them and buy the coin, not the plastic for a raw coin price. My way of beating the system that bleeds collectors of their money.
