got two today at spot. they were 1984s. I don't know anything about the series, but did I get a good deal?

If you got them at spot then you did well. The smaller diameter 1oz was not so popular when compared to the ASE so they went with the wider diameter planchet. (size matters syndrome)

Compared to the later version the smaller size does not come with a premium. The larger diameter is more popular and does come with a premium sometimes a bit more than the ASE and silver Maple. They are also carry MUCH smaller mintages than the ASE. You should start a date collection of the Mexican 1 Onza. They also offer fractionals, 2oz, 5oz, and Kilos, these are even harder to find.

If you got them at spot you did good! But I must agree with fcrazo, the new version Libertad (1996-present) is much more appealing than the older version.
