Verdigris Affecting Slabbing - Coin Community Forum

spaceace Pillar of the Community United States 797 Posts	Posted 03/19/2011 1:19 pm Just curious....as an example, let's say a coin ( IHC for this example) grades at VG-10 based on the details and wear of the coin on both sides. If is has a bit of verdigris that is left untouched how does that typically affect grading? I am not looking for anything too exact, obviously I know the coin needs to be viewed to give a true grade. I just wanted a basic idea as to how PCGS would look at mild spots of verdigris on a coin. Does it just call it genuine and list it as details? Does it still get a regular grade but just gets knocked down a bit? Is verdigris sometimes accepted on a coin that is over 100 years old without much of a ding on the grade? Thanks for any input. If there is slight verdigris, and I mean slight, you might get away with it. Thad would probably be your best guide on this-he's posted some pics of some coins that he conserved, and they came out great ( Verdigone). Unless it is a key date in Vg it might not be worth slabbing, either. Report this Post to the Staff

Verdigris can be just as distracting as a carbon spot. Remember, they're market grading, which means they're appraising, really, based on their cues from the market. From a technical grading standpoint, it's irrelevant. From a market grading standpoint, it's relevant to the degree it impacts on the coin's marketability, based on their perception of the market.
