The fact that the date is the clearest thing on the coin makes me a bit suspicious. Opinions?

Looks fine to me too. Uneven wear is all this is, you see it a lot on the lower grade 1885's and 1886's. Usually the obverse is stronger.
AG overall however, obverse is scratched.

I'd want TPG. The fields from the start of the date to the second right star look like a different texture (brown, crystalline) than the rest (grey, smooth). Also interesting that the date blowup doesn't show the 5.
