Yeah...that's rust in the "WE" (although it's not nearly as bad in hand as in the photo)...and that's a rust spot just below the neck/chin. I'm having trouble getting a good photo of this one. I don't see any wear or rubs that I'd normally see with a steel cent. The left wheat stalks are just as full as the right in hand. My photography skills suck.

I see wheaties often missing the top of the O in ONE CENT. Why does that happen?

That's a good question. I noticed on a lot of these it affects the E PLUR area, too. Were it just struck-through grease, I'd expect these to differ ever so slightly, but they don't. It has to be something else, I'm thinking.

On your coin, Scotty, I agree with Thad, that's a nice one in the MS-61/62 range.

Simple and common. Because it's the area oppositve the shoulder where there's a lot of metal flow. It's the reason they later lowered the shoulder relief on the design.

That is very interesting as that highly-incuse area of the obverse die is naturally going to absorb most of the impact.

I will say MS-61 for this one mostly due to the spotting overall the coin is relatively mark free
