Those of you that have been looking through rolls for a few years now, is it getting harder and harder to find anything decent? Seems to like more and more people are doing it now.

Two local banks I go to are very dry. The tellers are also looking at the coins before they hand them to you.

On average, how many boxes of nickels, dimes, quarters, or halves does it take to find one silver coin?

I know for a fact that my chase branches Do not look through rolled coin. I guess it is against policy one teller told me. This explained all the pesos and foreign junk I get. I also have received some rolls of dimes that are just 2 dimes on the end with pennies smudged in between. If the tellers looked through them, I would not get messed up like that. But I also snag a lot. I'd silver in te dime rolls. Us coin collectors shouldn't be so paranoid . The tellers also said they just dot have time to be looking through change all day. Some do, but not many. Stay at it and try some customer wrapped rolls if you aret already.

to answer willy13s question everyone has different find rates
some people have mathematical averages they figure out but in all honesty
IT IS ALL LUCK
sometimes I get 5 silver dimes a box
sometimes I get none
sometimes 2 silver nickels
usually no silver quarters
usually no silver halves
but then again once I got over 60 silver halves in one box

On average "for me" 1 silver dime every 100 dollars searched
1 silver dime for every 100 dollars
halves and quarters are so random for me I'm not even gonna say an amount
like I said it's all about luck

It's completely random... I've gone weeks without any silver, and other times I hit it big. I once found a cache of 17 Morgans at a bank. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=54068

It IS possible. It CAN be done. It's totally luck, as many others have said. Ask for foreign coins. Ask for coin-counter 'rejects'. Ask for 'anything weird or unusual'. Don't be afraid or bashful - if they are collectors, they aren't going to give 'em to you anyways, and if not, more often than not they can't wait to get rid of that 'worthless junk' (once, I scored $6 in Canadian toonies and a 1901 UK Victorian penny!)

JUST ASK - and play dumb unless there is a dang good reason not to!

I guess it depends on what you seek in rolls. My roll hunting is just fine...then again, not many look for what I seek.

I started searching in early January (mostly halves) and have found:

40% JFK = 99
90% JFK Half = 17
90% Proof = 1
90% Walking Liberty = 4
90% Franklin = 5

I don't really look for silver so don't have any problem. Sometimes the variety hunt seems streaky but that is part of the fun. Never know what you may find.

What you find sort of goes with the economy too. Lately with so many people out of work, they are dipping into jars, cans, bottles of coins they've had for many years. For example about 30 years ago I gave a 6 pack beer cans full of pennies to someone for a gift. They just finally dumped it into a bank. With so many out of work, crime too has increased for home robberies and one thing they usually find ia a ooin collection. Those too usually end up in banks or places with coin counting machines. Robberies of people going or coming from a coin show. coin stores, hobby stores and even toll both places have been robbed. All such coins get dumped into banks and or just used in vending machines and eventually end up in rolls that you find.

Carl...not to be contrary but you mention robberies quite often. Do you have any stats on that? I looked and can't find any solid data on those types of crimes. Other than the obvious copper stripping thieves. All the stats that I can find show theft down, in my area anyway.
