I just posted a few different articles in the "coins in the news" section. Seems to be more hype than anything else. I am sure that many will look at the U.S. Bullion coins after the announcement, but will it increase sales? The Bullion market is already dictated by the U.S. standard, so I am not sure it will make that much of a difference.

I don't know. Given the choice of Canadian gold or American gold, I'll take Canada every time. There was a great show on PBS or Discovery that showed the minting of Canadian coins. Canada uses the purest gold in the world for their coins. There is an extra step that they take in the refining process that other countries don't (including the US).

I am not saying that American gold is better. It is just the benchmark used.

Are you talking about their ultra expensive flower series at a purity of 99.999 ( that is five nines ) ? ( I believe it is electrolitic refining ) This year the Western Red Lilly at about 1 300 C$ http://www.mint.ca/microsite/en/gold_1.asp

Yes and by that benchmark Japan buys 60% in Wiener Philharmonikers and the Germans prefer Maples and Krugers The mint itselfs says quote: According to the Mint, the global market for 24-karat bullion coins is $2.4 billion

Oh don't go getting my hopes up on that now Unforunately here in the states our leaders are scared to death of change. While they picked a nice design for the gold bullion (St. Gauden) getting a new design would be way too much to ask for. It seems as if no one realizes that everyone wants something new and exciting. I would love to see a new design every few years. Maybe a series involving national parks or themes. I think that a move to a better design would increase the sales far more than adding 2 carats of gold.

You are absolutely right For the moment the French are the masters at doing gold coins in series of 500-1000-2000 etc They did all kind of Fairy tales (like alice in wonderland , Cinderella , Snowwhite, etc They also did all kinds of historical places like Montmartre and casles etc They did persons verly cleverly like my Avatar 2002 COA only 2000 made commemorating the 200 years birthday of Victor Hugo writer of Les Miserable and instead of picking an ugly pic of the writer they take the pic of the street urchin Gavroche probably one of the most liked characters from the book and what you see in the middle of the street is an open sewer

I would think it would HAVE to be a new design to eliminate confusion and to protect investor/collectors, with limited knowledge, from getting ripped off by con artist who tend to take unfair advantage of such people. Leaving the design the same as our current bullion pieces, would in my opinion, be opening a whole new nest of bees!!! Rememember the V-Nickel (Liberty) and what happened then, don't we. A change WILL have to take place in design!

Not that I think it would be a good idea, but the US Govt has been looking for a place to honor Ronald Regan. Maybe the new gold coin?

Welcome to the forum! I could see the government deciding to do that.

Here is an excerpt from the Mint director.
Fore said no theme has yet been selected for the new 24-karat coins but possibilities include liberty, freedom, independence or an early American historical image, such as the Liberty Bell. The Mint's Citizen Coinage Advisory Committee is scheduled to consider proposals next week

I saw that show too and it was very good. Made me wonder how long the US would go without doing it too. At the very least, it is a great marketing aspect.

So, from the article ND posted its sounds like "more of the same" for U.S. coinage! I still wish they would design coins of Bi-metal composition. The world coins that use bi-metals seem to be among the most beautiful! Mike
