Does anyone know what this is? Is it valuable? It is large about 38mm in diameter, 4mm thick and approximately 44gms in weight. The coin has a facial profile on the front and some sort of bird with writing on the back. The coin is a dark brown, picture fairly accurate with coloring. Sorry I can't get the pictures any clearer. Any information you can provide would be wonderful. Thank you.

Hi,

This is quite a neat coin

It's from Egypt - circa 200BC - Possibly Ptolemy IV - these are not my area at all so I'm not sure of the ruler - (he ruled 221-205 BC), Alexandria mint.

Probably £60 - £80 is about the value

nice find

Thank you Bacchus2 and echizento. It is that old? Is there someone who specializes in this type of coin that I can contact? Any idea what kind of material it is made of?

Hi,

It's made of bronze.

Wildwinds is the best free online identification site

http://wildwinds.com/coins/greece/egypt/i.html

and there is a different coin community called forumancientcoins who deal exclusively with ancients - though I can't recall if there is a specific expert on this series there. There are certainly some very knowledgable people.

It's a really nice coin and I'm sure you're suprised that that's all it's worth - but they did make an awful lot of them :)

Thanks Bacchus2. I don't know the first thing about ancient coins or even numismatics at all. I wouldn't have known what an ancient Ptolemy was 2 days ago if I fell over it. I found this site and the pictures in the second row are the closest I have seen to my coin. It is in the British Museum Catalog, whatever that means.

Oh, and yes I am surprised it is only worth that knowing it is that old. Seems like a lot of history to go through to only make it to that value. Was going through my dad's things and figured it was nothing since all the coins he had put aside as "going to be worth something someday" are not worth more than their actual value as far as I can tell. My dad didn't know about coins either. He just collected wheat pennies, nickels, half dollars, Olympic Coins, $2 bills, etc. like everyone else. I do have a Buffalo nickel without a date I remember finding in the ground as a kid. Not in the best condition so I don't know what if any value it has.

Thanks again for all your help.
