It's a Peruvian (Lima) gold 8 escudos, in very nice condition. Appears genuine at first glance, but you never know with these things. What is the weight and diameter?

Spot on. Lucky dude seems to be the appropriate moniker. =)
This is the large bust variety, which is the better of two for this year.
In this condition it's actually worth upwards of $3,000. Especially if you spend the $50 or so to have it graded by NGC or PCGS. This one actually has better details than an NGC AU-55 of the same date and variety that sold for $3,100 about 2 years ago, when gold prices were a lot lower.
The other coin you mentioned is one of a very common modern re-strike. Worth maybe 25% above silver bullion to a collector.

A few of the better coins I've found were submitted to PCGS through a local dealer who submits in numbers large enough to warrant a discount from what an individual would pay. You might seek out a PCGS certified dealer.

Luckydude - you have to locate a local representative who will guide you in the process of sending them in.
You can locate an NGC rep here: http://www.ngccoin.com/services/submitting.asp

or a PCGS rep here: http://www.pcgs.com/dealers/

Either grading company is reputable among collectors, but PCGS is probably better for gold coins.
