LOL I'm just waiting and praying for the day I find a silver dollar on the end of a loonie roll. I can dream you know!

you sure can dream..as the size and weight of a silver dollar FAAAR outweighs that of a loonie. It wouldn't even fit in the roll!

I think it's a good theory to target areas with lots of seniors, I've had pretty good luck at a bank near a group of high rises where there are a lot of retired people. I figure the best areas tend to be places where both the houses and the people are fairly old. Small towns with a lot of old houses are my favourite place to search coins.

just clarifying the US half dollar searches
you need to find a bank to special order the boxes of half dollars here and some banks charge for that
other banks wont do it at all because its a burden
if you are looking for half dollars in circulation here good luck
for the most part they are gone
sweet find though I am very jealous I only have one silver dollar (american of course)
but to get any silver at face value is a great score
congrats

Nice Job...Congrats...what a coincidence, 2 weeks ago I did the same thing on a whim during a deposit. I asked at the RBC and got 18, all nickel, and when I realized how lucky I was, I went to a couple of other banks. TD doesn't accept silver dollars etc. Scotia bank had 49, again all nickel. SO, I went over to a pawn shop where they sell coins etc. and they had their nickel dollars going for $4 to $5 each. Even though they're all nickel, I still felt lucky! These were all dollars, now I feel obligated to go back and ask about the 1/2 dollars!

Now I am wondering what other branches around has to offer!

Did you end up buying all 67 nickel dollars? I have found a few at banks today but didnt purchase them. I still don't know if it's worth it to hoard in the nickel dollars

Yes, I bought them all....and you're right, probably not worth the hoard, especially when you consider the carding at 67 then the 4 (20 2 x 2's per page) pages of steel eyelet sleeves. For me, that wouldn't really matter though. I am thinking of the future....not much to do with them now, but for Grandchildren or something to leave for someone to clean up! Even at a couple of bucks in the future, I still doubled my money. Even on ebay, I have seen them going for $2 OR $3.
I am pretty sure the people at the bank knew the significance of the silver coins, thus they kept them. Still shocked that they even kept the nickel ones out. They were in a baggy with an elastic around them at one bank and in a paper money envelope with an elastic around it as well.

The 18 silver dollars plus nickels that I bought came in a ziploc baggy from a different storage area in their vault. Only one teller in the bank knew they were there :)

Lol, I hope you didn't go to the pawn shop I'm thinking of. The owner is sharp but very foul-mouthed.

I've heard it's easier to find halves at US banks, many people in the US sort halves by the box but I haven't heard of Canadians who can get them regularly. I have never had any luck finding 50 cent coins or large dollars at any Canadian bank, but I basically gave up asking. Where in Canada was this?

This was in Winnipeg, MB at a Canada Trust Bank on the same street as Gatewest Coin ( but further down the road by about 2 mins in car )

great find! no dollars or anything but usually find silver when I'm in Winnipeg, order boxes from there and sometimes get silver
