So I went to a different bank then normal today for a bo of pennies. As usual I asked if they had any 50 cent peices kickin around and the lady said that she would check for me. To my surprise she brought up a bag of silver dollars/50 cent peices. I purchased $16.50 worth ( 15 dollars and the 3 50 cents she had ).
Need to know if this was a good buy and if so how good I lucked out?

Well I would say you got your money back in just the melt value of the 57 dollar, how many other pre 68 coins did you get. Now thats what I call a good deal. Well done.

Nice pickup, 10 silver dollars, and 1 silver fifty cent piece.. is a very good pickup. especially, for $16.50 I can never find a deal like that at my bank..

Considering you paid face, how could it not be a good buy? Congrats on a great find.

You did notice the OP was from Canadiaville, right? Halves and dollars circulated a lot more there than in the US.

Silver value works out to about 22x the face value right now for the dollars and halves up to 1967, so $18.50 would be around $407. In practice you can expect to get offered less than that. http://www.australian-threepence.co...n-values.htmI've heard it's easier to find halves at US banks, many people in the US sort halves by the box but I haven't heard of Canadians who can get them regularly. I have never had any luck finding 50 cent coins or large dollars at any Canadian bank, but I basically gave up asking. Where in Canada was this?

This was in Winnipeg, MB at a Canada Trust Bank on the same street as Gatewest Coin ( but further down the road by about 2 mins in car )

Wonder if any silver dimes or quarters would have come in with the same load?

You know occasionally people deposit all kinds of old coins and notes at banks, timing is everything. I picked up 7 BC-27a ($100 Osborne-Towers 1937 bank notes) off a bank once because I asked if they had any old bank notes in the scrub drawer (I was hoping to maybe score a devils face note or something). The worst one in the lot graded EF. So ask is my advice, just ask for anything that's not currently circulating, smile and take it all to pick through even if it's junk so they'll recognize your smiling face the next time.

LOL I'm just waiting and praying for the day I find a silver dollar on the end of a loonie roll. I can dream you know!
Hey Ugly, that's a great idea. Not being a paper money collector, the thought had never even occurred to me.
One thing I've noticed is that you'll get more consistent finds in poorer areas as opposed to mostly new rolls from banks in "better" areas. Maybe it applies to banknotes as well, or should I target areas with mostly seniors (Seems to me that they would be the ones holding onto those farm banknotes)?
